Puerto del Carmen - Birthplace of Tourism on Lanzarote
Transfer time from airport - 10 to 15 minutes approx.
Whilst British tourists have been visiting Lanzarote since the Victorian age their numbers only became significant when package holidays took off in the 1970's. Transforming a small fishing village formerly known as La Tiñosa into the biggest resort on the island - Puerto del Carmen.
Renamed after the local patron saint of fishermen Puerto del Carmen rapidly expanded from its organic heart in the Old Town harbour area into a 6km long strip of bars, restaurants, hotels and apartment complexes.
Its main draw are the high quality golden sand beaches which line the coast here - which along with Puerto del Carmen's sheltered aspect and close proximity to the airport make the resort easy to reach and ideal for a holiday at any time of the year.
Places To Stay
For such a large resort there aren’t that many hotels to choose from, with just the Los Fariones and the San Antonio available in the heart of Puerto del Carmen. Self catering accommodation is more the norm here and we offer a large selection of Puerto del Carmen holiday villas and apartments for rent. Most of these properties are located in Los Mojones or close to the large sweeping beach and bay of Los Pocillos.
There are three main beaches in Puerto del Carmen. Playa Grande is the largest and most popular and offers excellent facilities such as showers, wc's sun loungers and umbrellas. The beach here shelves gently into the sea and is very well protected so it is absolutely ideal for families with young children. There are a couple of beach bars close by and there are also pedalos for hire.
Playa Chica is a smaller and more intimate beach located close to the Fariones Hotel on the cusp between the New and Old Town areas of the resort. Facilities here are a little more basic although it's still possible to hire sun loungers and shades. The beach is also ideal for bathers as it is protected by a breakwater of massive boulders. As a result this is also a very popular spot with novice divers, who can learn to scuba safely here in the shallow waters.
The huge beach at Los Pocillos is located on the outskirts of the resort, as you head out from Puerto del Carmen in the direction of Matagorda and the airport. The aspect of this beach is a little more exposed to the winds that sometimes blow hard across the island, so usually this playa is best enjoyed during the summer months.
Things To Do
There's plenty to do in and around Puerto del Carmen for those who tire of just soaking up the sun. The resort is home to the Wild West theme park Rancho Texas, which boasts an impressive zoo, live animal shows and loads of rides and activities for kids.
Alternatively visitors can take to the sea by booking a boat excursion from the Old Town harbour area along the coastline or across to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. The latest attraction in town is the Waverider, which offers high speed thrills and spills. But if you prefer something a little mope sedate why not learnt o dive with one of the many schools offering lessons in the resort.
Puerto del Carmen is also very centrally located, making it an ideal base for the exploration of Lanzarote's many tourist attractions.
There are more restaurants in Puerto del Carmen than in Playa Blanca or Costa Teguise. Some of them are of rather low quality though, so it pays to do your research. The establishments listed below have proved to be consistently popular with previous guests and offer reliably good food.
Bozena's - 0034 928 511463
Located in a charming traditional Canarian building right by the Old Town harbour Bozena's combines Polish and Irish cuisine with impressive results.
Casa Roja - 0034 928 515866
An atmospheric waterfront location combined with consistently good quality food and service makes Casa Roja a favourite with both tourists and locals alike.
Casa Siam - 0034 928 528464
Lanzarote's only Thai restaurant is located close to the Music Hall Tavern and serves a fine selection of specialities, including traditional soups, curries and noodle dishes.
La Tegala - 0034 928 524524
OK, so it's located a little outside Puerto del Carmen in Macher but this modern Canarian restaurant is well worth making the effort for - as are the views from the main dining room.
